A 50th Wedding Anniversary Photo Quilt

My very dear friend, Jenn, has asked me to make a photo quilt celebrating her parents 50th Wedding Anniversary. No pressure, right? While I always try to do my very best on all the quilts I make, I want this one to be extra special. So, I’ve been doing a lot of plotting and planning.

The last time her mom was in town, we all went and selected the fabrics. I felt the fabrics should be more timeless and less trendy, so I tried to steer them in that direction. I really love the combination we came up with.

Each of the families submitted a certain number of photos. We bought photo fabric from the local quilt shop, although I’m not sure that it’s strictly relegated to just fabric. Basically, the fabric is adhered to a piece of paper that allows you to run it through your printer. We decided on 5″ x 5″ inch photos, because I really like the look of square blocks rather than rectangular ones. The design of the quilt will go something like this:

I’m really excited to work with these fabrics, as they’re very different from the fabrics I usually choose. I’m not gonna lie though, I’m a bit nervous about the whole thing. But, I just keep telling myself “…slow and steady, wins the race…” Just take your time and breathe.

  1. It will be fantastic! The fabrics are great, the design is classic, and the photos will be special, so you really can't go wrong! My only advice would be not to quilt over the photos, which you won't need to since the photo size is small. I want to do a family tree quilt with old pictures of my family…it's been on the horizon for a decade, but this is inspiring me to move it up "the list"! Can't wait to see the project as you work on it! 🙂

  2. I really love the fabrics you choose and was wondering if you could give me a little guidance by answering a few questions for me. What was the finished size of the quilt? How much of each fabric did you use?Where did you purchase your fabrics? Did you follow a pattern?

  3. This quilt was approximately 42" x 60". I have no idea about how much fabric I used and it was just a fabrics I liked. I don't even know if they were from the same line or not. (I should pay more attention!) I was really just winging it, so I started with a 5" block in the center and just added an inch or two around it, etc.
